ACT YOUR AGE

1. EXT. TOWN SQARE. MIDDAY

ALINA is sitting down, with a bag full of work and reading a book in her hand. She sits there quietly and contently reads.

DRAKE enters the town square, awkwardly strutting to try and look cool to people, and sees ALINA, eyes growing wide as he finds her attractive. Some wind blows, and ALINA strokes it back into place, which Drake is stunned by, foolishly believing it to be a gesture of affection towards him as he stares at her.

ALINA finishes the chapter of her book, gets up and leaves, with DRAKE eyeing her closely and deciding to secretly trail behind her.

2. INT. CAFÉ. MIDDAY

ALINA is standing in line for a coffee, in a relatively quiet café. She walks up to the counter and places her order.

ALINA
One small cappuccino, please.

ALINA then looks through her purse to get the money she needs to pay for it, except she is a few cents low. ALINA doesn’t panic, and prepares to get out her card instead. As she begins to do this, DRAKE appears at the counter and hands the person at the counter the right amount of money.

DRAKE
I’ll pay for it.

ALINA is surprised at the gesture, and takes her coffee.

ALINA
(awkwardly)
Thanks.

ALINA leaves the café, while DRAKE watches her with a confused look. DRAKE expected more gratitude for the in his eyes kind gesture he performed, and looks visibly displeased, growing a frown.

3. EXT. PARK. AFTERNOON

ALINA sits on the grass in the park, sketching the ducks in the pond in front of her. Wind starts blowing, causing her sketchbook to blow in the wind, sending pages flapping out of control.

DRAKE appears and holds her pages down on what he assumes is the page she was drawing on even as the audience sees that isn’t the case, hoping that ALINA will appreciate his help. ALINA snatches the sketchbook away from DRAKE, and gets up and walks away in a frustrated manner.

4. INT. LIBRARY. AFTERNOON

ALINA is on a library computer, doing lots of work, along with a few side distractions to keep her entertained. She begins exiting her tabs, one of which is a website for dating other girls, a brief signifier to show that she won’t give in to DRAKE as she isn’t even seeking to date a boy.

ALINA then saves her work, and takes her books she borrowed for study to return to the librarians. However, she realises she may have forgot to take out her USB and stops in her tracks anxiously. She goes back to her computer to double check if it’s still there, anxiously putting her books down as she is about to walk back.

ALINA anxiously walks to her computer for her to see it’s still in. Her worried look turns into one of relief, as she feared DRAKE may have taken the USB out for her. ALINA takes her USB, and returns to where she put her library books down, only to see they are missing.

ALINA begins to look for them only to spot DRAKE with her books, and he puts them on the counter for her. DRAKE then walks out of the library, knowing ALINA must be the one to return them.

DRAKE
Thank me later.

As DRAKE leaves, he awkwardly winks at ALINA. ALINA buries her head into her hands, growing increasingly frustrated from DRAKE’S advances.

5. EXT. BUS STOP. AFTERNOON

ALINA stands at the bus stop, expecting her bus to arrive at any minute. She fidgets anxiously, worrying that DRAKE might appear again to harass her. DRAKE soon appears, awkwardly standing next to ALINA.

DRAKE
(whispering)
You’re supposed to say thanks.

As the bus arrives, ALINA grows a frown on her face. She quickly turns to DRAKE, clearly sick of his pursuit of her.

ALINA
Thanks... for making my day incredibly frustrating. Oh, and it will always be a no.

DRAKE looks at ALINA with his mouth open in confusion, dismayed at how the girl he has a crush on has rejected her. He comically stomps his foot in anger over what happened.

6. INT. BUS. AFTERNOON

ALINA sits on the bus quietly, breathing a sigh of relief. She gets her book out and begins reading it.

7. EXT. BUS STOP. AFTERNOON

DRAKE walks along a footpath away from the bus stop, his head hung low, looking angry with a frown and reddened face. As he is walking, he notices another girl nearby. As she turns her head around, Drake’s eyes turn wide open, finding her attractive.

The girl notices DRAKE quite clearly checking her out, and rolls her eyes in frustration. She quickly walks away knowing his intentions, and as DRAKE begins to follow her with his eyes locked on her, he walks into a wall.

THE END

This is just a script I wrote for my, well, writing short scripts class during my Certificate IV in Writing and Editing course. Basically I wanted to do a sort of male/female crush story except instead of sympathising with the boy (Drake) pursuing the girl like you see in a lot of media, the narrative recognises his entitlement is completely unfounded and thus he is treated as such. Naturally, the girl (Alina) sees him for what he is and doesn't tolerate him. I always intended to have some sort of comedic tone to this, which is why I decided to try and make Drake seem pathetic in parts.

Also yes, "Act your Age" is indeed inspired by that one infamous Phineas and Ferb episode (truth to be told it was a last minute decision so I just settled on that).
